Hi all I sent my Autobox pressure loss letter to a Borg Warner Specialist who advertised in Classic Car offering free technical advice. As requested by them I am forwarding their reply to all. Please advise if you cannot open or read it and I'll send in another format. Peter Howells

Dear Sir I am copying the text of a letter sent to our Stag mailing list, because having found you have aweb site , you may be able to advise me about what is wrong with my automatic transmission. MESSAGE FROM G WHITEHOUSE AUTOS Peter, could you please distribute this response to the Stag Mail Group. if the gearbox loses it's drive it is because of loss of oil pressure inside the gearbox. This can be for a number of reasons, most commonly filter blockage, low oil level,or pump wear. If the gearbox has leaks, then it is difficult for you to always maintain the correct oil level. If you have driven the car with a low oil level and consequently a low pump pressure, then damage may have been caused to the gearbox. Regarding the dipstick, we do not have a Triumph Stag dipstick to measure so we cannot give you any information. If we had the car here, we would work out what to do for the best. If you can find a level of oil that allows the gearbox to perform correctly without spilling out of the tube then maintain that level. However, while the gearbox has oil leaks this will be difficult to do. Every time you drive the car and lose drive through loss of pressure you are wearing out the gearbox. The only permanent cure would be to overhaul the transmission. This would rectify the cause of loss of pressure and the oil leaks. Stripping the gearbox is also the only way to see if anything is missing or incorrectly fitted inside. Once it has been stripped for inspection, the only thing that can be done is a full overhaul. To summarise, ther only thing you can do is change the oil and clean the filter and try to establish the optimum oil level. If this is not possible to do this then the option is then to overhaul the gearbox and torque convertor. If you decide that this is what you want to do, then please contact us again and I will expain the nature of what we propose to do and give you a total price for this service. Best wishes, Peter Clode. P.S. May I asj you where you found our site.
