Seems 100% normal to me. Mine has always done that. Ticks a few times to top
up the float chambers, then holds its breath until the level drops and then
pumps up some more.
When it stops ticking.....worry.
Reminds me, I must get a spare. I have a plastic one fitted in 1991 which has
done 30K miles. It cost GBP35, half the SU price.
Always worth carrying that in case of a break down, plus the tools to fit it.
