The 'soft' water pumps seem to pack up rapidly, usually within 2-3000 miles
so hopefully you can relax by now.

The merths of measuring Rockwell hardness is to apply a calibrated heavy
pressure through a carefully shaped diamond tip into the steel surface. 
The diameter of the resulting indentation is measured under a microscope
and the hardness thus determined.
