Here is my experience with '83 533i parts tried on '87 535is:

Body and suspension: essentially everything is identical

Under the hood: alternator, aux fan, cooling hoses are the same. I believe
the heads are identical, at least, what is on top of them: senders,
thermostat, cold start valve, etc. The dist cap/rotor are a little
different, though interchangable. Blower motor: I use one from 633i, i
guess, any behr/bosch will fit bosch and sofica will fit sofica. Engine 
blocks are different, but many parts around them like support mounts are 
the same.

Electrical: all computer stuff is different. Instruments are different, 
though I used the 533i cluster for a short time, it seemed to show the 
correct speed at least.

Drive train: from the tranny back everything is the same except (surprise) 
the 2.93 non-lock final drive has a shifted rear mount point and it didn't 
fit into the place of 3.25 LSP I have on 535. 

Exhaust and O2 sensor are different, although I use the rear muffler from 
533, seems to be working.

That's all I had an experience with.
