UK E39's - Dealer Replaced Engines

Having originated from Australia, browsing through used car ads here in
the UK, I've come across a few ads from car yards which state something
along the lines of: For sale BMW 520iSE/523iSE car fitted with new
engined supplied by BMW SOandSo Dealer.

I'm aware of the high sulfur content problem that the US had corroding
the engines, however I'd not heard of anything about cars in the UK. Are
these cars simply individual, who've had to have had a major overhaul
due to some very bad driving ie these are vehicles to stay well clear
of?
