Chicago to SF

I am helping my cousin and his wife move to SF.  We are driving a moving 
truck, towing a car with it and driving another car.  I-80 is the most direct 
route but we are worried about weather on the way.  Any suggestions guys on 
the proper route this time of year?  We want to make this as painless and 
quick as possible.
