FWIW, I worked at a BMW shop over the summer and have shopped for a lot of 
BMW's over the last couple of years.  We saw BMW's of all years with over 
350k on the original unmolested motor quite regularly.  E-30's and up 
especially.  I didn't work on the 2002's and older stuff much myself so I'm 
not sure if they were as long lasting.  I can say that I bought my 95 318ti 
off a woman who was selling it to buy her 10th BMW (all of them purchased 
new).  She was also selling her other E36 (a 93 325i) which had over 350K on 
it and was in near perfect condition mechanically and cosmetically.  The 
impressive part is that she only does her oil changes when the Service 
Indicator tells her to.  And since they were highway miles, the service 
indicator only told her to do oil changes every 6-10K miles!  She considered 
my old 87 325i a really low mileage car at 200k mi  (still running great I 
might add).  As long as you maintain em like BMW recommends, there is no 
reason not to shoot for well over 400K, especially if you do oil changes 
every 3k mi like most of us do.  I want to get over half a mill on one just 
for kicks someday.
By the way, I'm now trying to sell the 318ti.  It's just about perfect inside 
and out, but I'm tired of driving an automatic.  It's for sale in central TX 
for $7,000 OBO.  The PO son/nephew/son-in-law (forget which) was a BMW 
mechanic at the Dealership, where all the maintenence was done (have 
records).
