E30 Speedometer malfunction

I'm certain that the battery on the S.I. board is bad and I'm going to 
replace it, but the odometer is malfunctioning . It can be reset, then goes 
to 10 miles and stops. The speedometer seems to function alright. Is this a 
mechanical or electronic problem? Would resoldering the connections on the 
speedometer correct the odometer problem?
