Help! Master Cylinder replacement problem

I bled the brakes on my E34 540iT a few weeks ago, but the pedal softened 
again. So I figured (at 133k miles), I might as well replace the master 
cylinder.  Everything pretty much went according to plan.  However after I 
buttoned everything up again, I stepped on the brake pedal, and found it to 
be rock hard with no travel, and no braking power whatsoever.  Any ideas on 
what I might have done wrong?
