Ron,
If you're planning on continuing your own repair work on the e28, please
do yourself a favor and buy the bentley manual, now about your rear
brakes... looking at the rotor you should see about a 1 cm hole. this
hole allows you to use a screwdriver or similar object to rotate the
ratcheting brake shoe adjuster. your rears have a dual brake system,
rotor for stopping and a small inner drum for emergency/parking brakes.
Most likely you have a lip or grove worn into your drum section that is
keeping the drum section firmly stuck. As the bentley describes, you
need to remove the plastic housing around your emergency brake lever and
loosten the adjusters to provide slack on the emergency brake cables,
then go after the ratcheting drum adjuster wheel through that small 1cm
hole back on the rotor. Eventually you'll get the shoes loose enough so
that the springs that hold the whole assy together will pull the shoes
together to get you enough space to clear the lip on the inner drum.
Clear as mud...right? really...you NEED the bentley!
