I'm surprised your service guy has not heard of this problem yet.  My E46 is on its 3rd pedal which is now getting sticky after about 6 months. Apparently heat and humidity accelerate whatever process causes the sticky or notchy feeling.  E46 drivers have been bothered by this for almost 2 years.  I believe BMW has finally come up with a new pedal assembly that prevents reoccurrence.  If your service guy can't help you, call BMW NA directly.  You can find an 800 number at bmwusa.com.

This reminds me that I have to schedule an appointment to get my fourth and last gas pedal.
