many local shops simply buy tires and wheels from the tire rack. they
get special pricing and you end up paying the exact same price you would
pay if you'd gone to the tire rack yourself. the advantage is that if
you deal with a local shop, you have a LOCAL place to go to with
questions or for warranty work. also, most local shops give lifetime
balancing and such when they sell tires.

in the DC area, curry's auto service is a tire rack dealer. you get the
same prices you'd get from tire rack, but you get local service too.
