John,
if I liked the car and it was in good shape aside from the trans, I would switch to a manual transmission.  The 5 speeds seem to last forever, so a good used parts should do the trick.  
On a side note, we do have all the used parts necessary, but there is probably someone in you're area with the same stuff, so less $ for shipping.
A buddy of mine did it with his, I'll talk to him tomorrow and see how bad the job was, and what all was needed.
Or get another one and have a nice parts car. . .:-)
