Bob,
I don't know if you participate in the E36M3 mailing list, but over there
this subject has been well covered. I get great info from both Richard's
list and Suzy's lists, I'm not suggesting that one is better than the other,
I enjoy participating in both.
That being said, the latest non-racer preferred solution is to get the E46
Rear Shock Mounts, the E36 paper gasket and the Z3 reinforcement plates.
Using whatever means are at your disposal, (I used a small ball-peen hammer)
remove the pressed in studs out of the E46 RSM's. Now take those studs and
put them into the Z3 reinforcement plates (these will need a small tack weld
to hold the studs in place). Now, you place the Z3 plates (mit studs) on
the top of the shock towers with the studs facing down and push the
stud-less E46 RSM's up from the bottom.
What you have done is allowed yourself to replace the RSM's easily in the
future without requiring the disassembly of all the trunks interior (which
from what I gather is the biggest PITA of this procedure). Since after much
discussion, we have determined the RSM's are consumable parts, they need to
be replaced just like brake pads, rotors, filters, etc. You may as well
make it easy to do the next time, plus the Z3 reinforcement plates provide
some additional protection from the dreaded
rear-shock-tower-cracks-around-the-bolt-holes syndrome.
Below is a list of required parts for this job.
33 52 6 754 096 2 RSM
33 52 1 137 360 2 M10x1 self locking hex nut
51 71 8 413 359 2 Z3 reinforcement plates
31 33 1 092 887 4 M8 Self locking hex nut
33 52 1 128 734 2 Paper gasket
Let me know if you need more info, but keep in mind that I have not
completed this job yet, I have only procured the parts.

Subject: 95 M3 Rear Shock Rubber Mount Replacement
To All:
Does anyone know how or where (website) I can get detailed instructions on
how to replace my rear shock rubber mounts for my 95 M3? Also, where is a
good place for the new parts?
The noise is quite loud from the passenger side rear wheel area. It sounds
like someone is taking a hammer to the car!
Any help is greatly appreciated,
Regards, Bob
