I got my answer on how to remove the stubborn screw.  I decided to
contact the Technical Service Advisors from the BMW CCA, so I went to my
latest Roundel, I always have one handy, and called Mighty Motors in
Cambridge, Mass.  They were really the closest ones available.  They put
on their mechanic who handles this job and he was most helpful.

I had said that the structural bracketry was theoretically removable,
well it must be removed.  This is a significant assembly of tubing and
other metal parts that is bolted to the fender wall, another bracket on
top of the glove compartment and to the the transmission tunnel.  Once
this is removed, the torx screw comes right off.  The mechanic also
indicated, for any other masochists out there interested i doing this
job themselves, that removal of the heater box cover requires an
assistant to raise the dashboard about  a 1/2 inch.

Let me give a plug for the guys at Mighty Motors in Cambridge, they were
really nice and only laughed at me once when I said I was removing the
heater core.  I had that coming to me, so I don't mind.  If anyone needs
work done in the Boston area, I hope you'll check them out.  Also let me
