If you ask a Porshe mechanic why your brakes squeal, he asked
"But do zey schtop ze car?"  And you say "well, yeah."  And he
replied "Zen, zere is NAH-SINK WRRRRONG vith your car!"

Or you could ask this bunch of bozos and get 400 different
answers - it's up to you.  My method of stopping brake squeal?
When the pads are new (or popped out for whatever reason), I
clean the backs with a little alcohol and put a thin layer of
silicon on them which stops the squeal until the silicone wears
off.  You won't get rust on the rotors from slow driving, you get
that from no driving, and the pads will clean that off pretty
quick.  The high-speed stop thing might have merit to clean the
schmutz off the pads, but then again it might be a wives tale.

The other options is that they're down to those little screamer
nubbies (wear indicators) and they're ready for replacement
anyway.  Lot's of city driving with a 2 ton vehicle will eat
brakes in a hurry.....

As far as washing is concerned, if you get in line at the Lizard
Wash 4000 (engineered by a good friend of mine some years back)
and use a little non-acid based wheel cleaner and select the
"Under Body Flush" option, it will get most of the brake dust
gunk off.  Just roll SLOOOOOOOWLY through the flush part, it's
right when you first enter the wash bay.  Other than that, I
wouldn't think that it can do much to the car itself.  They don't
get as much crap off the car (there tends to be a little "film"
of dirt left when you're done which is easily fixed by drying
with your wife's favorite white bath towels), but they don't
smack you paint with sand impregnated cloth either.  Choose your
death, ya know?  Nothing beats hand washing, but I use the Lizard
Wash as managable alternative.
