Engine ticking noise

My E36 M50 makes a loud, metallic, ticking noise. It usually happens after
prolonged drives in congested urban conditions . The ticking comes from
the lower part of the engine. It accelerates with RPM by if I rev up the
engine, at about 3.000rpm it disappears completely. Then, after idling fine
for a while, it starts again. Sometimes it seems to accelerate by itself
and then disappear. The 85.000 miles old engine sounds, otherwise, very
smooth.
The ticking is rather loud if listened to from outside the car, but it is
not loud enough to hear from inside.
The previous owner thought the ticking was caused by the tappers, but I
doubt that is the case.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
