Rear end ratcheting sound

'92 325i  98,000 miles...

Just started noticing a loud 'ratcheting' sound coming from the rear end
when I accelerate hard in a tight turn.  At first I thought it was the
tires 'catching' when they slide to the side--now I'm convinced it's
something more than that...but attenuated when there's lateral pressure
on the read end.  Doesn't happen if I'm not on the gas in a turn.

Guesses anyone?
