I went through this a couple years ago because I broke the steering box mount on the subframe a 2nd time. I have some rough details at:
http://www.teamdfl.com/bmw/e28/frontsubframe/subframe.html
I had my used replacement subframe welded and painted ahead of time. I think it took me about 5 hours including a steering box replacement and I did not have a lift. If you are crafty or brae, you could support the engine by means other than a hoist or crane: tree and chainfall, jack and wooden block, etc. $700 sounds steep even at shop labor rates.
Of course, I wonder how you bent the subframe. Accident? Moose? Early apex? Are there alignment issues beyond the subframe that the shop was anticipating?

The front subrame on my 1987 535is is bent. Can some one give me an idea of the price to replace it with a good used one. I have the used one ready to be installed. I was surprised to hear a body shop give me a $700 price to replace it with my used one. any idea of time needed for a pro with full shop, or an amerature , like me, to replace it would be helpful.
