<E28> head bolts - fact or fallacy?

Hello, all!

I posted within the past week my demise with my 1985 535i.  I was 
looking at either a blown head gasket - or a cracked head.

My car had neither one!

Seems the head bolts were "loose" - and eventually my engine's 
combustion was running loose!

"SUPPOSEDLY" the head bolts on this engine did not need to be 
re-torqued after installation?

Fact, or fallacy?  If fact, I pity the shop that will get a earful from 
me for the the work they did a few years ago!
