540i - what year is best?

As some of you guys already know, I'm in the process of moving up
from my '97 328is.  I've decided to get a current body style
540i/6-speed.  What should I look for and what should I avoid.  I
know which options I want and most are available on all those
cars.  I'm just trying to figure out if I should avoid any
particular year or option.  I'm considering everything from '97
on, but I'm leaning towards '99 and newer because of the torque
increase of the 4.4 motor.
