Squeaky rear suspension - what's the cause?

Dear fellow Bimmers,

I'm now on my second E34 525i. The current one's a '94 with 4 speed slush box
and a mere 53K kilometres - I've only owned it 2 weeks and its developed a
squeaky rear suspension - just like my '89 one did!  Symptom is just a
irritable little squeak from the back on a sizable bump - seems to be mostly
from passenger side but both sides do it.

Could be brought on by either low temperature (winter just arrived in
Switzerland) or driving too vigorously over those "traffic calming speed
bumps".  Anyone know where the damn squeaks come from - and how to cure them?
