The surging idle is commonly due to an air leak or the Idle control valve.
Make sure you didn't accidentally unplug or break the wires to the ICV. You
can check the wiring to the valve by hooking up an ohmmeter at the DME
connector (see Bentley). Also make sure you didn't knock any boot or hoses
off, make sure dipstick and oil filler cap are tight, etc.
