E36 factory alarm tripping itself...

Folks:

The other night my car alarm went off by itself.
What can cause this?  Bad wiring?  Is there an internal battery
in the alarm unit that can burn out?

I'm at a loss here to explain this because the car
is in a garage in a quiet neighborhood
and I don't think there could be anything running around
the garage to to trip it off.
