ERRATIC CD CHANGER

I have '96 328is w/HK stereo upgrade. I bought Pioneer 12 cd changer & an
adapter about 1.5 years ago. It worked great until about 6 months ago, when
cd quit working. I thought it was loose connection. It eventuallly started
working again. This has happened about 5 times now. Once it started fuzzing
out while I was listening to it. This time, it is almost working again, but
it seems to be searching for the disks, & it's not responding fully to
commands. I thought it was the adapter but now I'm not sure. Do you think it
is most likely the adapter, the head unit, or changer? Is there anyway I can
tell for sure? I bought from AutoToys & they have not responded to my
requests for help. In the meantime, even the cassette (which use to be
excellent) sounds like something is dragging in the mechanism when it gets
hot. Any ideas? BTW, I don't have the cash to replace the whole thing.   ;-(
