E36 coupe - Thud from the rear - update

Hello all

This is an update on progress towards solving the problem.  You may remember
that I was experiencing a deep thudding sound from the rear left of my 93 E36
325 coupe every time I went over a bump in the road.  This is what I have done
so far:

Checked battery - secure
Checked spare wheel and jack - secure
Checked exhaust - secure (although I still have my doubts - I cant make it hit
the body easily though)
Replaced the shock mounts - no difference
Removed the shock completely - no difference
Suspension system in general - nothing which looks suspect, although I am only
looking for signs of rubbing etc. i.e. shiny metal, rubbed off paint/plastic
coating.

I crawled around in the boot (trunk) whilst the car was being driven, the
noise seems to be coming from the wheel arch area, however I am still at a
loss for what it is.

Any ideas anyone ?
