1989 E34 520i: front strut cartridges?

Dear list,

Can anyone please recommend brand/ type of the above for my car. What is the
real difference between brands? I drive moderately hard but enjoy a
plush-ish ride without it being a bus. Do the better & more expensive shocks
last longer?
Is there any point getting better shocks over the internet? Any outlets
recommended? Any other tips for replacing them myself?
