E34 Electric cooling fan problem - More

Hi everyone,

Thanks to everyone who responded to my problem with the electric cooling
fan on my 525i.
I have narrowed it down to being a problem with either the relay or the
"low speed" resistor.

Does anyone know the easiest way to test the resistor, do you have to
remove the front grill or radiator to get to this component,  and are there
any connections to the resistor outside the radiator area where I could
plug a multimeter to test its resistance?

What should its resistance be if not broken, and can you get replacements
without buying the whole fan?

All help apreciated as I don't want to have to remove the radiator just to
change this thing!
