E-23 Transmission problem

Hi,
The transmission in my 1983 733i works when cold. When it warms up, the
transmission will stay in drive only when I'm on the gas going uphill, on a
level road if I am accelerating, or when traveling over 50Mph. When I try to
let off the gas a little, the transmission downshifts. When Coasting down a
hill, in drive, off the gas, the transmission oscillates between drive and
second every few seconds. There is no sign of slippage. When I accelerate the
transmission upshifts into drive, but will not hold . I Put the shift manually
into second "gear" and the car shifts between second and low correctly. The
ATF and filter are clean. Does any one have a diagnosis?
