Thanks for all the reads and suggestions on my problem.
Just thought I'd bring you up to date. I got seveeral replies to my
post about erratic idle with the A/C off. Most suggested that I had
ruined my idle control motor by cleaning it. I found this hard to
believe, since it works great with the AC on. I also remembered that
the Bentley manual has a procedure for adjusting the valve. I was going
to try that, but it ended up being even simpler. I was chasing several
problems, including strange temperature readings on the OBC and erratic
gauges, so I pulled the instrument cluster, disassembled it and looked
for broken connections. I found none. But when I pulled it, I noticed
that apparently the last time I pulled the cluster I had forgotten to
reconnect the single green wire that plugs into the green connector
under the white connector on the cluster. It is circuit A, but I don't
know what that is and I can't find it on the diagrams in my Bentley
manual. Guess what? When I put the car all back together, the idle is
smooth as glass with AC on and AC off.

By the way...while I had the cluster and the radio out I gave the
evaporator housing a closer look. It looks like the top of the housing
is held on with a bunch of metal clips. I'm hoping that later this year
when I change the dash I can get the housing apart and solve my recirc
door problem, the subject of another post which got no responses.
