No, you did not get hosed. $127 is not a bad price for a battery. And yes,
venting is an issue if it is located in the trunk. Batteries produce
hydrogen gas (Hindenburg ring a bell?), and must be vented if in a confined
place. Most places will sell you a battery that will start your car, but
chances are it won't be the right one since most cars don't have
trunk-mounted batteries. Interstate is the only non-BMW brand that sells the
proper vented battery for your application.
Oh, and don't be surprised about a 6 year old A/C that still works. I've
owned an 85 325e since 1994 - never touched the A/C and it chills like a
meat locker (knock on wood!). As long as the seals stay fresh, they'll be
reliable.
