I often ran my 533i without the sensor connected. My mechanic thought it 
might make it run rich and shorten the life of the cat but the last time I 
replaced the muffler at 220K he looked in the cat and said the honeycomb had 
not deteriorated.
I never thought it made much difference as to drivability but I have heard of 
528e cats filling up and causing drivability problems
