I've encountered situations similar to this, and I have to agree with
others who've responded and said that when you took two spaces to park
your car that you gave out a superiority signal that pisses people off.

I have an older car that I use for most shopping trips (1985 318i), but
when I need to stop at the store while driving the 1995 M3, I park at
the fringes of the lot, with the passenger side of my car next to a
grass median whenever possible. I'm betting that the person who would
park that far out is probably alone, and will exit the driver's side of
his/her car, thus keeping a swinging door away from my car. It's worked
so far. I don't need to take two spaces up, and I haven't pissed anyone
off.

I do seem to attract other nice cars when I park out there, too. I'll
frequently return to my M3 and find a nice BMW, Porsche, etc parked near
me.
