I've got a supply of front wheel bearings for the E30 M3 to any folks on
the digest who might need them. The SKF rep called me earlier this week
and admitted they did not know when production would resume on this part
(FAG does not make this part for BMW). As of now, there are no large
quantities available anywhere in the world and most of the warehouse
distributors who are selling the E30 M3 part number are shipping E28
bearings with 96 tooth ABS rings (don't use these on your car if the other
3 rings are 48 tooth).
What I am offering is E28 535i/M5 front bearings with the proper ABS rings.
To properly reproduce the ABS rings required a $2000+ investment (minimum
run was 100pc).
A few used M3 wheel bearings were purchased from folks on the list in order
to get the rings. One ring was sent to a metallurgist to determine exact
chemical and physical properties. We (the machine shop at my expense) then
purchased a $500 cutter to cut the new rings. Shadowbox inspection of the
SKF rings shows the manufacturer's cutter was about worn out and there is
substantial deformity between the teeth of the SKF parts. The rings were
then sent out for plating & finish was specified as a yellow chromate so
customers will easily be able to differentiate these from "used" ABS rings.
