help w/ 87 325 tranny, questions...

Hi,

I'm asking for a family member w/ an 87 325 w/ a 
tranny lever that will only go from park to reverse, nothing else:

- - any tips/exp on what's wrong and how to easily diagnose problem?

If it's dead, 

- - which years of 3 series tranny are interchangeable?
- - which models, 325, i, is, E use the same tranny?
- - anyone has or knows of a source of used trannies in
  S. Ca./Orange County/LA/SD area?
