BMW Chassis/Engine Numbers

Is there a central place I can get a list of the various chassis/engine
types and which cars they're associated with? I believe my '93 318is is an
<E36> with an M42 engine but since the owner's manual and the Haynes manual
don't make reference to them, it's a bit confusing...particularly when many
of the digest entries refer only to them!
