<e30> 318i - dim clock?

Greetings,

My 84 318i has recently developed a "dim clock" problem.  If I get my nose
about 2 inches away from the dash, I can tell that the clock is still
reading the correct time, but the display is so dark that it looks like the
clock is completely off when looking at it from normal driving position.

Thoughts / experiences?
