Charles,
The odor you're describing most likely is from mildew in the air ducts. I
had the same problem when I first bought my e30. Spray some sort of mildew
killing agent (I used an Amway product called Pursue - great stuff!)
directly into the vents and into the intake between the hood and the
windshield, turn on the fan and a/c and run it through. Repeat as
necessary. If you can rig a reach tube to the nozzle (a la WD-40's red
tube) this will allow you to spray deeper into the vents.
