RE: Z3 2.8 or M Roadster

Hi,

Just one thing to think about - does anyone *need* a Z3? :-)

Personally, if you have the means, I would advise that you go for the M
Roadster. I've driven a 2.8 5-speed, and there's a pretty significant
difference between that engine and the one in my '98 ///M3. Yes, the
2.8 was powerful, yes it was smooth, but there was something missing.
The engine just didn't rev like I was used to in my car, and I could
feel the engine running out of steam at higher revs. (Call me spoiled.)
Since I have not had the privilege of driving an M Roadster (anyone in
NJ willing to let me try theirs? :-) ) I can only imagine what it must
be like.

In short, IMHO a Z3-type car is for fun. I, for one, was glad to pay
the premium for the performance of my M3 over a 328i. If I had chosen a
Z3 instead, it surely would have been an M Roadster.

Good luck and happy driving with whichever car you choose!

Dave

I don't have any M Roadster experience but I did just spend Saturday
helping my neighbor put 400 more miles (up to 800 total now) on her
brand new 2.8 Z3 with automatic.

We could almost _feel_ that car starting to loosen up and get better as
we cruised up and down the mountains in VA and cruised back roads. She
was even nice enough to let me drive it a few times. I can say that
that 2.8 really motivates that car quite nicely and (yeah, I know I'm
geezin') I really liked the convenience of that automatic. I pulled out
to pass a jerk on a back road and he nailed the gas. Just a nudge on
the go pedal and I was downshifted and _way_ down the road leaving him
wondering if he hit the wrong pedal. :)

My advice is to try the 2.8 out and see if you think you need more
power. I'm sure the ///M feels better, but do you really _need_ it?
