<E30> Transmission question...

A friend has an '84 325 with an automatic transmission.  The car has been
great for years (engine and transmission) but recently the tranny has
started slipping while in reverse.  He puts it in reverse and has to wait 
before it will engage, sometimes needing to rev the motor a bit to help.
Is this a pressure problem?  Valves?  Belts?  I'm not familiar with the
automatics at all.  The only thing he's done so far is have the 
filter/screen/fluid changed.
