there is a better alternative in removing your
shift knob than just brute force. DO NOT
just yank it real hard..... now the best way
is to pop off the plastic center cap with
a flat head screw driver, and you will discover
a screw that holds the shift knob in place.
simply unscrew it, and gently remove the knob.
this way your'll definitely won't break your
rear view mirror!

Scott,
I checked out your tip with my collection of E36 shift knobs [1994 & 1996]
and unfortunately there is NO screw underneath, the center cap is glued on
with double sided stick-um so I had to pry like hell to get it off, only to
find nothing... so removing the center cap is a dead end with the E36, and
kinda botches up the original shift knob.
Good luck pulling it off! its a real bitch....and wrap a beach towel around
the rear view mirror it'll at least save the back of your hand from major
injury!
