VANOS vs. Non-VANOS 325 engines

My question involves my 1993 325is.  I recently called DINAN to inquire =
about a performance chip.  I was faxed information regarding HP and =
Torque increases.  It stated that while the 92 325 had max torque of 188 =
FT/LB @4500 RPM, the 93-95 models had 193 FT/LB @4500 RPM.  I was under =
the impression that all 92-95 325's had max torque of 181 LB/FT.  Is =
this true? Also, what exactly is the VANOS system?
