There are some very nice automotive games to play in a fast car from
CA to TX, particularly through Utah and Nevada. Yes, there is some
schlogging on straights, but it can be amusing to set the cruise at
100+ and wait till you see ANYONE before slowing down.
Depending on whether you're in the mood for outdoorsy, you can tour a
string of some of the most beautiful national parks in the country in
about a 5-6 day comfortable road trip, with some sight seeing, some
fun deserted twisites and some wide-open speed blasts along the way.
Sequioa-Kings Canyon, complete with, I believe 287 hairpin corners in
a 50 mile road (through spectacular scenery
Lake Mead-outside of Vegas has some great scenery and driving through
the area.
Zion and Bryce Canyon national parks are definitely worth seeing, and
the connector up to Arches-Canyonland 89-12-24 in Utah is a wonderful
drive. Spend a day or two tooling around Arches/Canyonland, rent an
MTB in MOAB and go for a ride, then you have a blast down through
Utah, NM and TX. (Or you could head south past lake Powell and Grand
Canyon).
Yes it's time consuming, Yes, you'll put 3k miles on your car, but
once you move to TX you'll have lots of wide open spaces with not much
other than straight concrete (OK they do a good offramp)...You might
want to savor one last great drive before you get there.
