The '88 528e (with the super-eta motor, post 3/87 production, with the dual
exhaust pipes)already has a shorter rear end than the earlier 528e's.
The 5speed '88s have the 3.25 gearing, while the automatics have the
3.46 gearing. This is much of the reason why an '88 528e feels
considerably livelier than the earlier versions. Of course, the 325i
head and better exhaust system also helps.
A 3.73 rear end from a 325i can be installed, which will definitely
improve accleration, but crusing rpms and fuel economy will suffer.
Hope this helps,
Ben
