Jeff,
On my '87 325, I can feel a slight detent on the floor and dash vent
controls, about 1/3 from the left side. These detents are switches making
contact to turn on the compressor. The defrost control (at least on my car)
doesn't have this switch. These (IMHO) are to prevent the A.C. from being
turned on with all the vents closed. If your dash vent doesn't act like
I've described here, you may have a problem with that control.
