I have a 1985 528e with 100,000 miles.  Car in excellent shape except for
the following noise:  a loud squeal/cricket type noise that increases with
rpm's occurs when the
engine is cold.  Usually happens when I start the car.  Increasing the
speed in 1st gear also increases the cricket/squeal noise.  Noise will go
away once the engine is warmed up or on highway.  Noise seems to be coming
from the center console area - seems to be related to something spinning or
twirling.  Possibly a vibration.  Help.

Sound like a loose fan belt to me.  You describe all the symptoms:
squeals when it is cold and then goes away, increases with engine rpm,
etc.
