Occasionally, after shifting (for example) the clutch pedal will only
return 3/4 of the way (according to friend). If you push down from here
(if he didn't notice), the clutch will not disengage. If he notices,
then he can manually pull the clutch back up and it works fine for the
next shift.
My immediate thought is the clutch master cylinder - no fluid is leaking
anywhere. However, the dealer is unsure - thought it might be something
in the linkage and they surely are familiar with hydraulic problems. Any
similar experiences in the 6's or E28's (basically the same right?)?
(Owner does not believe clutch has become stiffer.)

I have a 635CSi and a couple of years ago my clutch pedal started
developing a very annoying squeak. I got under the dash and greased up
the pedal joints and was surprised at the difference in the pedal feel.
The small amount of grease I put on the joints made the pedal
significantly easier to depress.
Your problem might be something similar. If the pedal has gotten really
gummy from lack of grease, the return spring might not be strong enough
to pull the pedal all the way back up. Obviously, the spring might also
be weak.
Just a thought...
