E30 airbox upgrade?

With all the talk about air filters and such, an old question came to mind. 
Can the air box from another (larger) model be adapted to an '89 E30 325i
in order to gain CFM volume (aka, air flow)?  Would the airbox from a
535i or 535iS perhaps be the ticket?  Is there a european OEM or Group
N box that would work?  I don't see the latter in their catalogue.  I'd really
like to hear if this option is worth looking into.  Probably $$$$ though.
