cosmoline removal

I think that this is cosmoline as well. It turns more yellow with age and
does harden as well. Once it's hard it's incredibly difficult to get off.
I've found that kerosean, a hot pressure washer and a scrub brush are
needed to get it off, and there's usually some residue in the cracks and
crevices.
I hated having to remove it years ago when I worked for a auto detail shop
preping new bmws. Now that I own one I live with it.

As a side note, many dealers do spray clear laquer on the engine
compartment of used cars to shine everything up (we just sprayed tire
dressing everywhere, worked just as well but not permanent). If you notice
cracking on the hoses, then it's laquer, and it's probably not worth
trying.
