E28 Clutch Shudder follow u

For those of you that replied to my inquiry about clutch shudder: I had the
tranny dropped and had the clutch, pressure plate, throwout and pilot bearings
replaced. From past experience, the high effort required for the clutch
pedal was a pretty good indication that one of the tabs on the throwout
bearing (that are pushed by the clutch linkage) had broken off. This was
confirmed by the mechanic when I retrieved the car this afternoon. I asked
about the shudder (he called it "rabbit hopping") in engagement in 1st gear
and occasionally reverse- the mechanic said that the missing tab on the
throwout bearing made it move at a "cocked" angle along the shaft instead of
at right angles. This in turn offset the clutch/pressure plate alignment so
that they were not engaging as parallel disks. This is what he thought was
causing the shudder. In any case, the pedal effort is probably one fourth of
what it had been, and the clutch take up is smooth as can be! Yeah!!! Now
all I have to do is keep from mashing the clutch pedal through the
floorboards!

In response to posts requesting info about fuel economy of various models,
here is some assorted random bits of data (that my wife says I am "strange" to
keep track of - she's probably right):

Vehicle:
     o `86 528e, third owner,
o purchased about 1 year ago with 122,242 miles.
During the last year -
o Driven 6500 miles, mixed city and freeway, primarily short trips 5-7
miles.
     o Avg. fuel economy, 23.4
o Avg. OBC fuel economy readout error 7%
     o Fuel: 87 Octane "regular"
o Oil consumption nil between 3 month oil/filter changes - dipstick
level indicates no consumption
o Maximum fuel economy on trip: 29.9 over 130 miles.
Still looking for an opportunity to take a longer trip! :-)
